Spaying it Forward in Ipoh, Malaysia

Spaying it Forward is a neutering sponsorship program for the stray animals of Ipoh, Malaysia. The program focuses on spaying female stray dogs. It was founded by a couple, K&C. They truly believe that neutering is the only humane and effective way to manage stray animal populations. The program is based on co-sponsorships where K&C pay 50% of the surgery cost, and a Co-sponsor pays the other 50%.

How Spaying it Forward Began

Mila, Spaying it Forward's first female dog in Malaysia.

Initially, the project was supposed to last four months (Sep-Dec 2020) with a goal of neutering 300 stray dogs, preferably females. Over time Spaying it Forward grew and has now neutered more than 1465 dogs and 320 cats for a total of 1785 animals in and around Ipoh.

Launched on August 31st, 2020, Malaysia’s Independence Day, K&C hoped to free at least some strays from life-long suffering. They also wanted to show their appreciation for the rescuers and feeders who continued to help the strays even during the very challenging times of COVID-19. K&C believe neutering is the best way to help. Neutering will reduce the number of strays that the rescuers have to feed, vaccinate, treat and/or shelter.

Over the four months, the project expanded to include cats, sheltered and recently adopted strays, and also pets belonging to families that needed a little financial assistance or motivation to neuter their pets. The project involved 10 vets at varying degrees, four animal groups, and 153 different rescuers/feeders/owners of all ethnic backgrounds from the Ipoh area.

To claim the 50% subsidy, participating rescuers (or their reps) would submit a photo of the animal, a photo of the bill, and a few data points (catch location, sex, and surgery date). This information was used to make a simple profile photo for each animal. (Be sure to check out the cuties!) Depending on the arrangement, subsidies were paid out to the vets, rescuers or rescue groups.

Initial Results

At the completion of this first phase, Spaying it Forward sponsored the surgery of 551 animals:

The program sometimes paid for catching/darting, pet taxis, boarding, vaccines, medical treatments, burial, etc. for some dogs. Normally those expenses, if incurred, were almost always paid for by the “Co-sponsor”. Co-sponsors were usually the rescuers themselves, their friends and family, or donors of the animal groups.

By late November, many rescuers started asking for the project be extended. They desperately needed support and often couldn’t get a vet appointment, or their targeted dogs were obviously pregnant. K&C felt horrible having to disappoint them. Just because the project was supposed to end on December 31st doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be urgent need for help after that.

The Project Continues

Spaying it Forward's first dog of 2021 in Malaysia.

So, the project was relaunched in February 2021 with the goal of spaying an additional 500 female stray dogs. This new goal was soon passed. K&C continue to pay half of the surgery costs and collect donations to pay the remaining half.

Besides the surgery, rescuers often have to pay for darters, transportation, vaccines, boarding and other treatments in addition to feeding the dogs every day. These expenses add up. With your help, Spaying it Forward can make it possible for rescuers, especially those who care for many strays, to spay their animals and reduce the population of strays in Ipoh.

Please make a donation to help the rescuers. Each female spayed is tens of puppies prevented in the dog’s lifetime alone. For transparency and accountability, each donation along with the donor’s name, and date will be clearly listed on the Spaying it Forward Donation page. Thank you.
